Perimenopause: The warning signs of menopause
Menopause generally occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 and is characterized by well-known symptoms such as hot flashes, urinary incontinence, and sleep disturbances.
7 signs of a hormonal imbalance and what to do about it
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I have a hormone imbalance?
Hormone imbalances can show up in a lot of different ways—often as changes in your energy, mood, sleep, weight, or menstrual cycle. If symptoms are persistent, worsening, or affecting your quality of life, hormone testing and a clinical evaluation can help identify whether your hormones (like thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, or cortisol) may be contributing.
Common signs of a possible hormone imbalance include:
Fatigue (especially if sleep doesn’t help)
Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
Sleep issues (insomnia, waking at 2–4 a.m., non-restorative sleep)
Mood changes (anxiety, irritability, depression, brain fog)
Low libido or sexual discomfort
Hot flashes or night sweats
Irregular periods, heavier bleeding, or skipped cycles
Headaches or worsening PMS/PMDD symptoms
Hair thinning, acne, or unwanted hair growth
Cold intolerance or heat intolerance
Digestive changes or bloating
A hormone imbalance can be caused by many factors—perimenopause/menopause, thyroid disorders, PCOS, stress/cortisol dysregulation, insulin resistance, certain medications, and more. The best next step is an evaluation that includes your symptom history plus targeted labs.
What we typically do in hormone management:
Review symptoms, medical history, and goals
Order appropriate lab work (based on your symptoms)
Create a personalized plan that may include lifestyle support and, when appropriate, evidence-based hormone therapy with monitoring
What types of hormone tests do you offer?
We offer comprehensive hormone testing through our partnerships with Labcorp and Quest, which means we can order virtually any hormone lab you may need—from basic screening to advanced panels. Your provider will recommend the right tests based on your symptoms, age, medical history, and goals.
Common hormone tests we offer include:
Female hormones: Estradiol (E2), Progesterone, LH, FSH
Male hormones / androgens: Total Testosterone, Free Testosterone, SHBG, DHEA-S
Thyroid testing: TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Thyroid antibodies (TPO, TgAb)
Adrenal / stress hormones: Cortisol (blood or saliva when appropriate)
Metabolic hormones: Insulin, HbA1c, fasting glucose (for insulin resistance/weight concerns)
Prolactin (when indicated for cycle changes, breast symptoms, or fertility concerns)
Depending on your symptoms, we may also recommend supportive labs that affect hormone health, such as lipids (cholesterol), CBC, CMP (liver/kidney function), iron studies/ferritin, Vitamin D, and B12.
Can I pay out of pocket?
Yes. You can absolutely pay out of pocket for hormone testing and hormone management services. Many patients choose self-pay because they want transparent pricing, faster access to testing, or a broader range of lab options.
Through SmartLABS (a division of SmartMED), patients can access Labcorp testing at significantly discounted self-pay rates, which can make comprehensive hormone testing more affordable—especially for patients with high deductibles or limited coverage.
Are hormone tests covered by insurance?
Yes—hormone testing is often covered by insurance, especially when it’s ordered for medically appropriate symptoms such as fatigue, irregular periods, heavy bleeding, hot flashes, low libido, weight changes, thyroid concerns, or suspected hormonal conditions. A common misconception is that hormone testing is “cash-only,” but in many cases it can be covered when the visit and labs are coded correctly based on your symptoms and medical history.
At SmartMED, we have a lot of success obtaining insurance coverage because our providers:
Document symptoms thoroughly
Order labs that match the clinical concern
Use appropriate medical diagnosis codes (not “wellness” codes) when indicated
A few important notes:
Coverage can still vary by plan (deductible, copays, in-network vs. out-of-network labs).
If you prefer transparent pricing or have a high deductible, you can also choose discounted self-pay testing through SmartLABS.
Insurance coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary by individual plan, benefits, network status, and medical necessity guidelines. While our team documents symptoms and codes visits/labs appropriately to support coverage when indicated, SmartMED cannot guarantee insurance payment; patients are responsible for any deductibles, copays, coinsurance, or non-covered services. Self-pay options, including discounted lab pricing through SmartLABS, are available upon request.
Do you offer treatment plans if my results show a hormone imbalance?
Yes. We offer personalized hormone imbalance treatment plans based on your symptoms, medical history, and lab results. Our goal is to help you feel better safely and sustainably—whether you’re navigating perimenopause, menopause, low libido, fatigue, weight changes, mood shifts, or sleep issues.
At SmartMED, hormone management is led by Melissa Anderson, an experienced provider with advanced training in hormone care. She is a member of The Menopause Society and has completed advanced education in hormone management through Harvard University certification programs.
Your treatment plan may include:
A detailed symptom and health review
Targeted hormone and thyroid testing (insurance or self-pay options)
Evidence-based recommendations for lifestyle, sleep, nutrition, and supplements (when appropriate)
When clinically appropriate, prescription hormone therapy with ongoing monitoring and follow-up labs
We tailor the approach to your needs and prioritize safety, clear communication, and measurable improvement over time.
